Wangechi Mutu

In Theory and Practice, we are working on 10 min presentations to give to the class. In mine and my partner Sarah's presentation, we decided to look at the various roles/"parts" that women take on and are perceived by in certain cultures. One artist that we used was Wangechi Mutu, a Kenya born collage artist and painter. In some of her work, Mutu deals with the ways that women are perceived in Africa. For example, in Africa, it's basically a traditional "rite" for men to beat and even chastise their wives and fellow women in their community. This is just one example of what Mutu addresses in her pieces and often times, she shows the strength and perseverance that women have.
Mutu is a great example of an artist to use when working with collage work. While some of it may be too "graphic" in nature to show to any age groups younger then college, she definitely addresses on topics that can be perceived as taboo or controversial...which makes for perfect discussion talk within a classrom.
